While many 19th century composers wrote music for keyboard instruments, few devoted themselves as diligently to writing for the piano as did Fr6d6ric Chopin (1 810-1849). His love for the piano was immense. His intuitive understanding of formal design and brilliant methodology propelled his compositions to new creative peaks, making him one of the most influential piano composers of all time. His etudes were revolutionary, and still present a historically significant system of playing. They are enchanting creations, high-spirited, technically challenging and aesthetically pleasing. The melodies contained in this collection of Etudes are as beautiful and captivating as any in piano literature.

Willard A. Palmer's deliberate and methodical research is based on several authentic sources: facsimiles of Chopin's autograph manuscripts; important early editions; the notes of Chopin's close friend and copiest, Jules Fontana; as well as the notes of international pianist and pupil of Chopin, Karl Mikuli. The teaching side of Chopin is reflected in his Etudes, and this Alfred edition ensures that his diligent pedagogy and melodic genius are faithfully represented.

Paris was a magical and important city for Chopin. The success of his first Paris concert, in 1832, firmly established his position as a great pianist and innovative composer. He taught, performed and composed in Paris throughout his life.

Early Impressionist painter Johan-Barthold Jongkind (1819-1891) made the Seine the subject of many of his paintings. His The Seine and Notre-Dame of Paris, painted in 1864, captures the sense of balance and formal design often found in Chopin's Etudes.
